Ai Tam (Loving Heart), Ho Chi Minh City

medium_aitamkids.jpgI visited Ai Tam day care nursery in Ho CHi Minh City in february this year, during the Chinese New Year break. A lady called Grace told me her story of escape and survival during the war. She also told me about an old lady in the US who sent money for Grace's nephew to open a daycare centre. I went to see it. The centre takes care of 30 children under 5 years old, and it is run by family members, none of whom get paid. The government has actually granted them the unsusual permission to expand to 60 children. Some of the parents can not afford the meal fees. Needless to say money had run out and several needs were obvious: the toilet had no roof, and the family upstairs slept under corrugated iron. The ceiling for their room cost me almost the same as my visa to Vietnam. The tees also paid for some other necessary items such as crayons, and a fire extinguisher...
